WASHINGTON D.C., -- According to the USDA,?1 in?3 children are either overweight or obese.? Starting September 30th, 18 states will receive federal grant money to provide healthy school lunch options, and Washington is one of them.
The Evergreen State will receive more than $268,000 in funding.? The grants will provide technical training to school staff in cooking, menu planning, nutrition and web training.
The announcement is part of the "Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act" which is a big piece of the First Lady's "Let's Move!" campaign.
"School meals are funded by taxpayers; they should be the healthiest meals possible and not contribute to health issues or drive up cost," says?USDA Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan.? "While the new standards ensure that children have the energy they need to learn in the class and be physically active."
The funding will be available for the next two school years.
