Miami (FL) Baseball Conditioning Coach Involved in PED?s Scandal

? January 30, 2013Posted in: ACC

MiamiDisappoinmentSmallA scathing report about a major Performance Enhancement Drug investigation in the state of Florida came out on Tuesday from The Miami NewTimes which includes many connections to the University of Miami baseball program. This isn?t the first time that the Hurricanes baseball program has had issues with performance enhancement drugs as Frankie Ratcliff was arrested in the fall 2009 for having 101 grams of marijuana and 19 vials of HGH on him. (LINK)

In the report, Miami (FL) Strength and Conditioning Coach Jimmy Goins is implicated in the scandal. Goins has been serving as a strength and conditioning coach for the Miami baseball and track and field teams for the last nine years.

Goins isn?t the only one connected with the University of Miami baseball program to be involved with this scandal as star catcher Yasmani Grandal and Cesar Carrillo are also mentioned as members of the PED ring. Interesting enough, Grandal was suspended 50 games by MLB this offseason after testing positive for Testosterone.

LEGO, Bodyform and Death Stars ? PR Done Right | Business 2 ...

You know the old saying that all press is good press?? Well, while it may be true for movie stars, it certainly isn?t true when it comes to corporate image.? PR disasters can spell economic ruin for businesses??both big and small??and without an effective PR team, any company can quickly find itself the victim of a widespread witch-hunt, one that eventually ends in bankruptcy as all hopes of profit go up in flames.? Fortunately, however, many businesses have mastered the art of public relations.? Their examples provide inspiring models for PR strategies that not only assuage complaints, but even go on to become massively effective marketing tools.? If your businesses can find ways to follow their lead, you?ll not only keep yourself out of hot water, you might even unexpectedly bring yourself a windfall.? Here?s what PR done right looks like:

Measured Response

Often, great PR is simply a matter of speaking the right language.? These companies saw complaints as opportunities, satirical attacks as a marketing possibilities, and unusual requests as a chance for inspiring loyalty:

  • When a 7-year-old boy lost his new Lego action figure at a supermarket, thus destroying his Christmas money investment, he emailed the company asking for a replacement.? In an endearing response, they sent him a free replacement along with several other toys, and even included some sage advice from the Lego ninja master about always listening to your dad and guarding your Lego armies.

  • After a man left a snarky comment on BodyForm?s Facebook page, indignantly claiming he?d been lied to for years by their ads, and led to believe menstruation involved blue liquid, upbeat music, and rollerblading, they responded with a video that quickly went viral. In it, BodyForm?s CEO comes clean about the gruesome truth, drinks a glass of blue liquid, and even breaks wind.
  • When a petition to build a Death Star attracted thousands of votes on the White House website, the US government responded with tongue-in-cheek ?this isn?t the response you?re looking for? seriousness. Amongst other reasons for rejecting the proposition, they cited an estimated $850,000,000,000,000,000 price tag, a fatal flaw that can be exploited by a single brave man in a starship, and a policy against blowing up planets.

Micro-Targeting

Sometimes the smallest and most personal PR campaigns yield the biggest results.

  • A Porsche dealership photographed their new sports car in the driveways of affluent houses in Toronto, and printed flyers showing homeowners just what they could look forward to.? Not only did it provoke quite a few sales, it also caught media coverage.
  • Cadbury sent personalized giant chocolate bars to every member of Great Britain?s Olympic Team this year.? The UK?s top athletes were quite pleased, and the news quickly picked up the story.

Causing a Buzz

  • An upscale Newcastle hotel recently conducted a great PR stunt by replacing all their bedside bibles with the Kindle version, provoking a mild media controversy while publicizing their new high-tech amenities.
  • In an unconventional marketing move, promoters for the new Batman movie stirred up local public interest by hiring an artist to make a huge chalk 3D streetart installation in Madrid.? When photos of the piece began proliferating across the Internet, the local ad was given worldwide circulation.

Needless to say, not all of these models will be right for you.? The key is to contrive a strategy that reflects the unique image you want customers to have of your company.? At the end of the day, PR is about branding.? Your image is determined by your relationship with consumers.? So give their imaginations something to latch onto, show the human face of your corporate infrastructure, and inspire them to see your company a bit differently.

Amid the Sundance rush, it slipped my mind to list the nominations for the International Cinephile Society's awards -- for which I had a hand in voting. The ICS is a diverse group of over 80 film journalists, academics and the like, so their picks tend to veer a little off the beaten track. Here, for example, you'll find no mention of "Argo," "Les Mis" (no, not even for Anne Hathaway), "Life of Pi" or "Silver Linings Playbook," but plenty for foreign standouts like "Tabu" and "Once Upon a Time in Anatolia." "The Master" leads with 10 bids; "Holy Motors" follows with nine. Winners will be announced on February 9; check out the full list of nominees after the jump, and at The Circuit.

Philips loss widens in Q4; sheds division

AMSTERDAM (AP) ? Royal Philips Electronics NV Tuesday said it will sell the entertainment division which contains many of the consumer products for which it is best known, such as audio and video equipment, to Funai Electric Co., Ltd., of Japan for ?150 million ($202 million) plus licensing fees.

Funai will assume responsibility for the manufacturing of the Philips products but license and sell them under the Philips brand for five years. It has an option to renew.

The disposal is the latest in a series of moves by Philips as it gradually shifts its corporate focus away from consumer electronics manufacturing ? while continuing to draw some benefit from the historical strength of its brand.

Philips still makes some popular household products such as coffee machines, electric toothbrushes and electric shavers. But its cutting-edge technologies are now mostly concentrated in the lighting sector, where it is the world's largest manufacturer; and in health care equipment, where it competes with General Electric and Siemens in making medical imaging equipment.

In addition to the Funai deal, Philips also reported fourth quarter earnings Tuesday that were hammered by a ?509 million cartel-forming fine ? the largest ever levied by European regulators.

Philips said its underlying business improved on an operational basis, with its lighting arm, which accounts for a quarter of the company's total business, seeing sales rise 43 percent.

Excluding restructuring charges and the fine, earnings were up 50 percent to ?875 million, the company said.

"Our operational results improved across all sectors, as a result of increased sales, overhead cost reductions, and gross margin expansion," said Chief Executive Frans van Houten.

The fine, levied in December against Philips, LG Electronics, Panasonic and others, came after regulators concluded that the companies engaged in price fixing in the television market over two decades. Philips, which is fighting the fine, disposed of its television division to China's TPV Technology last year in a deal similar to the one announced Tuesday with Funai.

Overall, the company's fourth quarter net loss widened to ?358 million from ?162 million from the same period in 2011, with both years affected by big charges: in 2011 Philips wrote down the value of its lighting inventory and booked big losses on the now-disposed television arm. Despite its fourth quarter loss, the company made a net profit over 2012 of ?226 million, a marked improvement on 2011's ?1.3 billion.

In the 2012 period, sales grew 6.7 percent to ?7.16 billion, but Philips said that would have been only 3 percent if recent acquisitions and currency effects were stripped out.

Since taking the top job at Philips in 2011, Van Houten has vowed to cut 6,700 jobs, or 5 percent of the company's workforce, by 2014, as part of a cost reduction drive.

He said "challenging" conditions in Europe and the U.S. in 2012 hit orders and as a result he expects 2013 sales to start slowly before picking up in the second half of the year.

Shares were down 0.2 percent in early trading to ? 21.90.

Technology: Staying in touch through the years - MyHeritage.com ...

29????Jan 20130 comments

There are many ways to stay connected with our family, no matter the distance.

We write e-mails, send letters or speak on the phone. Even with Skype on our computers, many of us still have a land line phone at home to connect with our families locally and worldwide.

Hearing our families? voices brings us closer together, but how were we able to keep in touch before all these technological advances showed up in our homes?

Construction of the first regular phone line was completed in 1877. By the end of 1880, there were 47,900 telephones in the US. Since the first Bell telephone company was established in 1878, phones have evolved from the ?candlestick? telephone to rotary-dial and to today?s cordless handsets.

The telephone emerged as an improvement to the telegraph. Many credit Alexander Graham Bell with the telephone?s invention; he did patent the invention. However, others have been recognized for their contributions including Italian-American inventor Antonio Meucci, who developed a voice communication apparatus considered by many as the first telephone.

Alexander Graham Bell placing the first New York to Chicago phone call in 1892. Image credit: wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone

Alexander Graham Bell placing the first New York to Chicago phone call in 1892. Image credit: wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone

The phone?s design has changed technically and visually since the first 19th century. They have been made of wood, metal and - more commonly today - plastic.

The first model had two parts to speak and listen. In 1890, the phone evolved to the handset, with a one-piece microphone and earpiece The early 20th century rotary dial was replaced by touch-tone phones during the 1960s. By 1970, cordless phones provided a user-friendly telephone that made it possible to communicate from anywhere in our homes.

The history of cellular phones can be traced to two-way radios, but wasn't really developed until the 1960s. The first cell call was placed in 1973. Today, many of us have mobile phones, making communication with our families easier without being restricted to phoning from a specific place.

Computers have also helped with communication since the mid-1970s. With the Internet, communication via the web has increased. What is better than seeing family even if they are far away? All these great communication tools provide easy ways to stay in touch with the people we love.

With MyHeritage, there are several ways to make communication easier with our relatives. Members can send messages, create events, birthday reminders and more.

What modern communication technology tools do you use to stay in touch with your family? Before cell phones and video communication, how did you keep in touch?

Romani artist and Holocaust documenter Stojka dies

VIENNA (Reuters) - Romani artist Ceija Stojka, whose work helped expose the Nazis' persecution of the Romani people, died in a Vienna hospital on Monday aged 79, her publisher told the Austria Press Agency on Tuesday.

Holocaust survivor Stojka wrote one of the first Romani autobiographical accounts of Nazi persecution, the 1988 book "We Live in Seclusion: The Memories of a Romani", and dedicated decades to telling her people's story through music and art.

The Romani people, like the Jews, were sent to concentration camps by Germany's Nazis during the Second World War. Up to 1.5 million were murdered in an attempted genocide.

Austrian-born Stojka survived internment in the Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen and Ravensbrueck concentration camps, along with just five other members of her 200-strong family.

"I reached for the pen because I had to open myself, to scream," the activist said at an exhibition in Vienna's Jewish Museum in 2004.

The Budapest-based European Roma Cultural Foundation on Tuesday described Stojka as an "outstanding Austrian Romani woman ... and a key figure for the history, art and literature of Romani culture in Europe".

The foundation's executive director, Timea Junghaus, wrote in an email to Reuters: "She was a role model for the present generation and an inspiration for the future generations of Roma in Europe."

Stojka began painting at the age of 56, often using her fingers or toothpicks instead of brushes to apply acrylic paint and ink.

Her works, many of which are recreations of her experiences in the concentrations camps, have been described as "eerie" and "childlike" by viewers of her exhibitions around the world.

Romani people are still subject to forced assimilation or segregation, cultural repression, eviction and other forms of discrimination in many countries, especially in Europe.

The European Union estimates there are between 10 and 12 million Romani people in Europe, making them the continent's largest ethnic minority, although populations are hard to count, since many choose not to register their ethnic identity.

9to5Mac: Apple preparing to release another 4th gen iPad SKU, signs point to 128GB model

Still waiting for a 128GB iPad? One could come sooner than you think. According to 9to5Mac, Cupertino is preparing to add a new SKU to its fourth-generation tablet line up, slotting next to the existing 16GB, 32GB and 64GB configurations as a premium model. A source at a well known US retailer shared the devices' SKU information with the outlet, marked up with internal Apple terminology that described both WiFi-only and cellular-capable slates in black and white facades. The devices' description column features a lone adjective, too: ultimate.

9to5Mac couldn't confirm that the description meant a 128GB model was inbound, but the assumption seems reasonable enough -- developers are finding references to 128GB iOS devices in iOS 6.1 beta code, and icons for the size were found in iTunes 11. Moreover, "good," "better" and "best" have all been used to describe different iPad configurations in the past -- ultimate seems like the next logical step. Strong evidence, to be sure, but we'll hedge our bets until we see something official. Read on to see the leaked SKU information for yourself.

Senate immigration reform backers seek quick action

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A bipartisan group of senators who have agreed on an immigration reform plan said on Monday they hope to move quickly with legislation giving 11 million illegal immigrants a chance to eventually become American citizens.

The four Democrats and four Republicans released the outline of a comprehensive immigration reform effort - one with plenty of details missing - that still must be turned into legislation.

At a news conference on the proposal, Democratic Senator Charles Schumer of New York, one of the eight working on the initiative, said he hoped it could be passed by the Senate in late spring or early summer.

In an attempt to build support among lawmakers, the Senate proposal would couple immigration reform with enhanced security efforts aimed at preventing illegal immigration and ensuring that those foreigners here temporarily return home when their visas expire.

A Republican member of the group, Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, said he hoped for an overwhelming vote of support in the Senate, which could enhance chances of a bill passing the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.

But Graham also warned, "If for some reason we fail in our efforts to pass comprehensive immigration reform, I do believe it will be many years before anyone is willing to try and solve this problem."

The plan, which faces an uncertain future in Congress, was unveiled a day before President Barack Obama was to give a policy speech on immigration in Nevada.

With Republicans regrouping after November elections in which they failed to garner significant support from Hispanic voters, there are other indications immigration reform could be on a fast track in the newly convened 113th Congress.

A bipartisan group in the House also is close to unveiling its own immigration proposals, according to the congressional source with knowledge of the reform efforts.

The source said the House group could detail its outline either later this week or next week.

No one expects an easy path for any of the proposals, which are still being developed and lack detail.

The last comprehensive revision of the nation's immigration law was in 1986. Numerous efforts since then have encountered stiff resistance, especially from the conservative wing of the Republican Party, which as recently as the Republican presidential primary races in 2012 opposed anything resembling an "amnesty" for undocumented immigrants.

"When you legalize those who are in the country illegally, it costs taxpayers millions of dollars, costs American workers thousands of jobs and encourages more illegal immigration," warned Republican Representative Lamar Smith, who is the former chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.

With the electoral power of Hispanic voters growing rapidly, however, leading Republicans have been urging conservatives to rethink both their positions and their rhetoric.

The Senate group included Republican Senator Marco Rubio of Florida. Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid expressed his support for the effort.

Under its proposal, undocumented immigrants would be allowed to register with the government, pay a fine, and then be given probationary legal status allowing them to work.

Ultimately, they would have to "go to the end of the line" and apply for permanent status.

The White House praised the group's efforts but warned that Obama would not be satisfied until there was meaningful reform. The president "will continue to urge Congress to act until that is achieved," a White House spokesman said.

    A look at RIM's much-delayed BlackBerry 10

Wednesday will be the day Research In Motion Ltd. holds an official launch for its much-delayed BlackBerry 10 smartphones. RIM says that the phones will be released not long after that.

RIM previously announced delays to its upcoming BlackBerry 10 system, which the company considers crucial to its future. The delay means the phones missed the holiday shopping season and come months after the launch of a new iPhone. The delay could make it even harder for RIM to regain market share lost to Apple's iPhone and devices running Google's Android operating software.

Here's a look at developments surrounding the BlackBerry 10 in recent months:

Oct. 18, 2011: RIM unveils a new operating system, combining existing BlackBerry elements with RIM's previously announced QNX operating system for phones and tablet computers.

Dec. 6: RIM says "BlackBerry 10" will be the new name for its next-generation system after the company loses a trademark ruling on its previous name, BBX.

Dec. 15: RIM says new phones running BlackBerry 10 won't be out until late 2012, instead of early 2012 as previously expected. The company says the phones will need a highly integrated chipset that won't be available until mid-2012, so the company can now expect the new phones to ship late in the year.

May 1, 2012: RIM unveils a newly designed smartphone prototype powered by BlackBerry 10. The prototype BlackBerry has a touch screen, but no physical keyboard like most BlackBerry models. No update is given on the new system's launch date.

May 2: Company stresses that while the prototype has no physical keyboard, RIM will continue to make some models with one.

June 21: Company says the first BlackBerry device running BlackBerry 10 will not have a physical keyboard, only a touch-screen one. Ones with hard keyboards will eventually be made, but the company declines to say when.

June 28: RIM says it's delaying the launch of BlackBerry 10 yet again, to the first quarter of next year. CEO Thorsten Heins says RIM's top priority is a successful launch of the new BlackBerrys. He adds, "I will not deliver a product to the market that is not ready to meet the needs of our customers. There will be no compromise on this issue."

July 10: At its annual shareholders meeting, Heins asks disgruntled investors for patience as it develops BlackBerry 10. He says the product's quality is more important than rushing out the software, and he argues that some telecom carriers prefer a 2013 launch because next-generation wireless networks will be more widely operational by then.

Aug. 23: RIM says it has begun showing its new BlackBerry smartphones to wireless carriers around the world, but it remains "months and months" away from starting to sell them. The company says feedback from those carriers has been positive, and it will begin to discuss product launches and other business aspects with the carriers soon.

Sept. 25: Heins promises to restore the BlackBerry phone's stature as a trailblazing device even as many investors fret about its potential demise. Heins speaks at a conference for mobile applications developers to rally support for BlackBerry 10.

Oct. 31: RIM says its BlackBerry 10 smartphones are now being tested by 50 wireless carriers around the world. The company calls it a key step.

Nov. 12: RIM says it will hold an official launch event for BlackBerry 10 smartphones on Jan. 30.

Nov. 13: RIM says the phones will be released "not too long" after the launch event.

Nov. 29: RIM's stock rises after Goldman Sachs upgraded the company's shares, saying there's a "30 percent chance" that BlackBerry 10 smartphones will be a success.

Dec. 13: RIM says the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency will launch a pilot program with its smartphones using BlackBerry 10.

Department of Foreign Affairs - T?naiste's address to the EU-Latin ...

T?naiste calls for solidarity and certainty in Europe and says that the sacrifices made by the Irish people must not be squandered. Commitments made to lessen the burden of debt by separating banks and sovereigns are critical to the future of our ecenomy. The failure to conclude negotiations on the promissary note would have a potentially catastrophic effect. It is only with a combination of huge national effort and international agreement that we will emerge from this - and that is true for every country.

President Pi?era, President Van Rompuy, President Barrosso... esteemed colleagues from the European Union and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.

I would like to begin by expressing my thanks and congratulations to you, President Pi?era, for the exemplary work and planning that has been dedicated to hosting our meetings in this beautiful city of Santiago.

As many speakers have already observed, our two regions have a long, shared history and a mutual understanding that we value very much.

These are challenging times for our regions and our peoples. That said, I am very aware of the strong and continued growth of many countries in the Latin American and Caribbean region. This growth is all the more valuable because it has lifted millions from poverty and reduced inequality and marginalisation. Economic growth accompanied by social cohesion is the objective we all aspire to.

But this morning, I want to speak specifically about international cooperation, and solidarity that lies at its core.

In recent years that solidarity has been tested in many ways, not least by the financial crisis ? the aftershocks of which we are all still coping with.

We have been talking for years about how our economies have become more globalised and interconnected, and the crisis demonstrated all too well just how vulnerable we all are to what happens in another country, or another region.

Indeed, whether we are talking about climate change, the threat from terrorism or financial instability, the common theme for all of us is the shared impact of such events.

In Europe, our response has been to recognise that the answer to this interdependence is more cooperation, not less.

In the same way, the answer at summits such as this must be more cooperation ? not less.? We have to ask ourselves how we can cooperate more to promote the common interests of our peoples.

In response to the profound economic crisis of recent years, the European Union has taken a number of important steps, particularly in the management of our single currency, the euro.

We have also agreed to put in place a Banking Union which will establish a single supervisory mechanism to regulate Europe?s banking system.?And we have agreed on the principle that banking debt and sovereign debt must be separated. As a result, we have seen a return to relative calm in financial markets.

But we still have work to do if we are to build on the stability that has been restored, in order to make it the basis for economic growth and job creation.? And that is the theme of Ireland?s current Presidency of the EU: Stability, Jobs and Growth.?

Because we must, as European leaders, respond to the problem of unemployment ?particularly among young people. That is, without doubt, one of the most troubling legacies of the economic crisis.

In my own country, we have made important strides in working our way out of the financial crisis that brought us into an EU/IMF assistance programme in late 2010.?

Through hard work, and difficult decisions, we have reduced our public deficit, stabilised our economy and are in a good position to exit our bailout programme during 2013.?

But in order to do that, we have to reach agreement on how to deal with the burden of our national debt.? If we can reach agreement on these issues, Ireland ? and Europe ? will have a very positive story to tell.?

Getting there, however, will require more work ? and, perhaps, a greater sense of that solidarity that underpins the Union ? because there is no guarantee of a successful conclusion.?

Time is not on our side. We have entered a critical phase in this process, and a major deadline is looming.

We all know that the Irish people have shouldered a great burden of debt. We in Ireland believe this showed solidarity with Europe when the risk of contagion was high. The sacrifices made by the Irish people must not be squandered now.

The commitments made to lessen that burden of debt ? by separating banks and sovereigns ? are critical to the future of Ireland?s economy. Further, failure to conclude negotiations on the promissory note would have a potentially catastrophic effect on Ireland.

It is only with a combination of huge national effort and international agreement that we will emerge from this ? and that is true for every country. Right across Europe, and Latin America, people are looking for stability ? from which jobs and growth will follow.

As the second-most open economy in the world, Ireland understands better than most the issues that matter to the business community. And certainty is one of them. It is our job to provide that.

Ireland believes strongly in the importance of open markets and free trade ? particularly with this region. This is another way in which greater international cooperation and solidarity can improve the way we live.? With this in mind, expanding Europe?s trade is a central priority for us.

It is in all our interests to develop stronger trading links between Europe and the emerging economies.

As a country, Ireland is committed to developing relationships first built up through aid, into relationships that are also based on trade.

Development aid is one of the cornerstones of Ireland?s foreign policy. Throughout this economic crisis we have, with great difficulty, managed to maintain our overseas aid budget at just under 0.5% of GDP ? again, out of a strong sense of solidarity. And as Europe attempts to agree a budget for the next seven years, we must recognise our collective responsibility when it comes to helping the world?s poorest nations.

Notwithstanding the pressure we are all under, we cannot sacrifice what is also the cornerstone of the European Union foreign policy ? the same sense of international solidarity that resulted in our winning the Nobel Peace Prize.

But we should also be cognisant of the fact that, by 2015, an estimated 90 percent of economic growth will take place outside of the EU ? much of it in this region, where you also know the challenges of building a unified collective of South American states.

I want to take this opportunity to congratulate you again on the success of CELAC, and wish you well as you deepen your regional integration.

We also look forward to working with you to deepen the engagement between our two regions. Working together ? with a sense of solidarity ? we can achieve much, at this critical time for our people.

    ?

    Thank you.

Egyptian youths, police clash in fourth day of violence

CAIRO (Reuters) - Police fired tear gas at dozens of stone-throwing protesters in Cairo on Sunday in a fourth day of street clashes that have killed at least 41 people and compounded the political challenges facing President Mohamed Mursi.

In the worst violence, security sources said 32 people died in Port Said on Saturday when protests erupted following a court verdict sentencing 21 people, mostly from the city, to death for their role in a deadly stadium disaster last year.

Mursi's opponents have also taken to the streets across Egypt since Thursday, accusing him and his Islamist allies of betraying the uprising that overthrew Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

"Till now, none of the revolution's goals have been realized," said Mohamed Sami, a protester in Tahrir Square on Sunday. "Prices are going up. The blood of Egyptians is being spilt in the streets because of neglect and corruption and because the Muslim Brotherhood is ruling Egypt for their own interests."

On a bridge close to Cairo's Tahrir Square, youths hurled stones at police in riot gear who fired tear gas to push them back towards the square which was the cauldron of the uprising that erupted on January 25, 2011 and toppled Mubarak 18 days later.

The latest protests were initially timed to mark Friday's second anniversary of that revolt.

The U.S. and British embassies, which are both close to Tahrir, said they were closed for public business on Sunday.

The spasm of violence adds to the daunting task facing Mursi as he tries to fix a beleaguered economy and cool tempers before a parliamentary election expected in the next few months which is supposed to cement Egypt's transition to democracy.

It has also exposed a deep rift in the nation. Liberals and other opponents accuse Mursi of failing to deliver on economic promises and say he has not lived up to pledges to represent all Egyptians. His backers say the opposition is seeking to topple Egypt's first freely elected leader by undemocratic means.

    DIVISIONS

The army, Egypt's interim rulers until Mursi's election in June, were sent back onto the streets to restore order in Port Said and Suez, another port city on the Suez Canal where at least eight people have been killed in clashes with police.

Although scuffles continued in Cairo, there was no immediate sign of the kind of deadly escalation of previous days in the capital or elsewhere.

In Port Said, residents heard gunshots overnight and shops and many workplaces were shut on Sunday. Residents said the city was tense and there was a risk of further unrest later in the day when the dead were due to be buried.

Many Egyptians are frustrated by the regular escalations that have hurt the economy and their livelihoods.

"They are not revolutionaries protesting," said taxi driver Kamal Hassan, 30. "They are thugs destroying the country."

The National Defence Council, headed by Mursi, has called for a national dialogue to discuss political differences.

That offer has been cautiously welcomed by the opposition National Salvation Front. But the coalition has demanded a clear agenda and guarantees that any agreements will be implemented.

The Front, formed late last year when Mursi provoked protests and violence by expanding his powers and driving through an Islamist-tinged constitution, has threatened to boycott the parliamentary poll and to call for more protests if a list of demands is not met, including having an early presidential vote.

Egypt's transition has been blighted from the outset by political rows and turbulence on the streets that have driven investors out and kept many tourists away, starving the economy of vital sources of hard currency.

Egypt's defence minister who also heads the army, Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, called for the nation to stand together and said the military would not prevent peaceful protests. But he called on demonstrators to protect public property.

Clashes in Port Said erupted after a judge sentenced 21 men to die for involvement in 74 deaths at a soccer match on February 1, 2012 between Cairo's Al Ahly club and the local al-Masri team. Many of the victims were fans of the visiting team.

There were 73 defendants in the case. Those not sentenced on Saturday will face a verdict on March 9, the judge said.

Al Ahly fans cheered the verdict after threatening action if the death penalty was not meted out. But Port Said residents were furious that people from their city were held responsible, triggering wild rampages through the streets.

Top Medical Issues in Sports Women Want To Be Aware Of

    Posted on : 27-01-2013 | By : mary | In : Health Tips

healthy styleWith recent advances in women?s sports medicine, girls and women can learn to safely take part in any sport or type of exercise they choose. While some people start getting interested in sports medicine only after they?ve had an injury, you should also learn as much as you can as a preventative measure, so you can avoid problems in the future. Even though each sport has different risks so does each player of that sport which is why it?s so important to make sure you are listening to your body.

Finding a physician who specializes in women?s sports medicine is important for any woman who is going to exercise or participate in sports regularly. Some believe that these doctors are only necessary after an injury, but the fact s that a sports medicine specialist can offer advice to help you prevent injuries. If you have areas that are more problematic for you, such as your knees or back, a sports medicine doctor can give you proper advice on treating and preventing recurrence of these conditions.

If you do have a serious injury, these are the doctors who can suggest the best course of treatment. One thing to consider when choosing a sports medicine physician is whether or not he/she is experienced and respected in his field (a good reputation counts). Men and women are both susceptible to a common sports-related injury like a stress fracture. These are very small breaks in bones, and usually occur from repetitive stress activities, such as running or jumping. These breaks normally occur in the lower half of the body, such as the feet or legs. This problem can also occur in the arms if you engage in repetitive activities such as rowing or pitching. Building up your tolerance and endurance gradually is a great way to prevent this injury when starting a new activity. Make sure to see a doctor promptly if you suspect any kind of fracture.

Nutrition plays a large role in sports medicine, and women can prevent and even reverse many conditions by paying attention to their diets and adding certain supplements. Maintaining bone health is very important for women, so they need to make sure they are getting enough calcium. MSM, glucosamine and chondroitin are normally found together in a formula, are very helpful if you are active. Supplements that are good for your heart and bone health are fish oil capsules. You will have stronger bones by eating a healthy and balanced diet and taking some supplements. The information above gives us a clear picture of the fact that women?s health and sports medicine covers a wide range of conditions. It?s easier to prevent the conditions when you have a greater awareness of them to begin with. If any of these happen to you be sure to seek medical advice rather than getting discouraged. Just take it one day at a time and allowing yourself time to heal.
