Mexican glassmaker case may export US bankruptcy rules ? Reuters

Tue Jun 26, 2012 1:05pm EDT

(Reuters) ? Mexican glassmaker Vitro SAB is heading to a U.S. appeals court to save its restructuring at home from an assault by U.S. creditors in a case that could transport the U.S. bankruptcy code beyond that nation?s borders.

The case pits one of Monterrey, Mexico?s powerful and politically connected ?Group of 10? businesses against U.S. hedge funds, which Latin American critics have reviled as ?vultures? for their battle against Argentina?s sovereign debt restructuring.

Hanging in the balance is the use of Chapter 15. Foreign companies have used this 7-year-old piece of the U.S. bankruptcy code about 600 times to get an overseas insolvency proceeding enforced in the United States.

Many creditors have come to view Chapter 15 as little more than a rubber-stamp process that allows U.S. assets to be folded into a foreign proceeding. However, some legal experts say the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals could improperly recast it as a tool to impose U.S. bankruptcy law abroad.

Vitro?s appeal stems from a ruling this month by U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Harlin Hale of Dallas, who refused to enforce the company?s Mexican restructuring against U.S. hedge funds led by Aurelius Capital Management and Elliott Management Corp.

The hedge fund bondholders had said the restructuring plan violated a bedrock rule of U.S. bankruptcy by rewarding shareholders before repaying creditors in full.

They also attacked Vitro for effectively engineering support for its restructuring by issuing debt, which included voting power, within its corporate family and then using these ?insider? votes to outnumber objecting outside creditors.

Hale?s ruling has won praise from financial experts and investors for giving a measure of certainty to cross-border finance.

?While it?s bad for Vitro, it?s actually good for Mexican companies because they can borrow on more stable conditions in the U.S.,? said Claudio Loser, a fellow with the Inter-American Dialogue think tank and a former International Monetary Fund director.

Rob Rauch, who manages a distressed emerging market portfolio for investment firm Gramercy, said the case could provide a positive precedent for bolstering Chapter 15.

?We have found a strong reluctance of U.S. judges to tackle the issues, especially if there are not significant assets in U.S.,? he said.

Some legal experts, however, believe Hale may have ruled the right way, but for the wrong reasons.

The ruling potentially allows anyone opposed to a foreign proceeding to attack it by pointing to a precedent in the U.S. bankruptcy code, which was not the intention of the law, said Ken Coleman, a bankruptcy lawyer with Allen & Overy.

?Now we will flyspeck every (Chapter 15) case that comes in as if it were a U.S. domestic case,? he said.

Vitro is confident of its appeal, according to its lawyer, Andrew LeBlanc of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy.

Elliott declined to comment, and Aurelius did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

MANIFESTLY CONTRARY

Chapter 15 allows Hale to recognize and assist in Vitro?s Mexican $3.4 billion insolvency proceeding, which a Mexican court approved in February.

Other companies that have used Chapter 15 include Japan Airlines Corp, Icelandic lender Glitnir Banki HF, German alternative energy company Solar Millennium AG and Humpuss Sea Transport Pte Ltd, a unit of Indonesia?s PT Humpuss Intermoda Transportasi Tbk.

Hale refused to enforce Vitro?s plan because of what he called ?the most problematic part? of the restructuring ? the elimination of the hedge funds? claims.

Under the plan, the funds? debt, which was guaranteed by Vitro?s subsidiaries, was replaced with bonds of much lower value, while shareholders ended up with $500 million.

The subsidiaries never declared bankruptcy and so were never protected from their creditors.

The hedge funds have won judgments against Vitro?s subsidiaries in various U.S. courts for defaulting on the debt. Vitro wanted Hale to issue an injunction to prevent the funds from enforcing those judgments, granting the subsidiaries ?nondebtor releases? that would protect them from being sued.

Hale is supposed to support the Mexican restructuring without concern about how it would turn out in his court, said Rafael Zahralddin, a Wilmington bankruptcy lawyer with Elliott Greenleaf. The exception, he said, is that a judge must stop short of taking action that the bankruptcy code describes as ?manifestly contrary to the public policy of the United States.?

That bar is meant to be quite high, and Coleman of Allen & Overy said he could point to dozens of U.S. bankruptcy cases with nondebtor releases.

?How can it be manifestly contrary to U.S. public policy when it exists in our system?? Coleman said.

By contrast, he pointed to a restructuring of Muscletech Research and Development Inc, a Canadian maker of health supplements made with ephedra, which was linked to heart attacks and strokes, and which U.S. authorities have banned.

U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff in Manhattan did not find the plan ?manifestly contrary? even though it did not provide a jury trial to U.S. product liability claimants ? a constitutional right in the United States.

If the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals affirms Hale?s ruling, it would apply in the states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. While it would not be binding in New York or Delaware, two busy courts for Chapter 15 cases, it would set a precedent.

?This opens the door for better use of capital markets,? said Loser, the former IMF official. ?Of course, others will say it is U.S. imperialism, trying to impose its own legislation on other countries.?

Fujifilm outlines XPro1 lens roadmap, brings zoom at last this fall

If there's been one outstanding gripe with Fujifilm's X-Pro1 camera, it's been the absence of zoom lenses; short of French kissing the subject, you might not get the photos you want. While there isn't much of a solution right this second outside of buying the fixed-lens X10, the Japanese camera designer can say when we'll see an interchangeable XF-mount zoom lens: fall 2012. That's when a bright 18-55mm, f/2.8-4.0 optically stabilized lens will make its appearance, along with a 14mm f/2.8 prime. Fujifilm will revert to unveiling nothing but pancakes and primes during early 2013, but the middle of that year will finish covering the zoomable basics through a wide-angle 10-24mm f/4.0 OIS lens and a 55-200mm, f/3.5-4.8 OIS telephoto. We wouldn't expect pricing with the new glass still months away -- but at least you can start planning that Sumatra vacation knowing you won't have to chase down the wildlife to get a good keepsake shot.

We Evolved To Eat Meat, But How Much Is Too Much?

Paleo diet promoter John Durant digs into some ribs. Enlarge Allison Aubrey/NPR

Paleo diet promoter John Durant digs into some ribs.

Allison Aubrey/NPR

Paleo diet promoter John Durant digs into some ribs.

You won't catch John Durant in a tie. Shoes are optional, too. He has traded cubicle life for something a little wild: Promoting the diet and lifestyle of our ancestors from the paleolithic era. He's blogging and writing a book about his approach.

"For millions of years, we didn't have an obesity problem because we ate foods that our metabolism was adapted to," Durant says ? foods such as root vegetables, tubers, fish and, of course, red meat.

"We were active and lived a healthy lifestyle," he says. Durant is one of many folks following the popular meat-laden paleo diet. He packs his freezer with deer meat and has found lots of places near his home in Manhattan to buy marrow bones and organ meats, as well as paleo-friendly barbecue joints for a meal out.

But modern medicine tells us that too much meat is bad for us, so what's a consumer to do?

?

During a workout at a CrossFit gym, a gathering spot for lots of paleo-enthusiasts, Durant told me it's no longer a challenge for him to avoid the onslaught of bagels and pizza at every street corner. The paleo approach is to eliminate grains and processed food, which are relatively new to the human diet. And, as a result, Durant says, he no longer gets the spikes and dips in his moods, and he feels better.

Now, everyone from the American Cancer Society to the American Heart Association and popular food writers such as Mark Bittman tells us to eat less red meat.

But Durant says it's a meat-based diet that was fundamental to early human development. (Check out our tongue-in-cheek Time Traveler's Cookbook: Meat Lover's Edition for more on this.)

My colleague Chris Joyce has reported on how a meat-based diet helped make us smarter.

And paleoanthropologist John Hawks at the University of Wisonsin, Madison, agrees: "We definitely evolved to eat meat."

"When we look at the fossils of early Homo [sapien], we see this immediate increase in the size of the body and also increase in the size of the brain," Hawks explains.

But that was then. Very few cavemen lived long enough to get heart disease or cancer. These are the reasons we're told to limit red meat consumption now.

"It really began in a big way in the Framingham study in the 1950s," says Michael Thun, an epidemiologist with the American Cancer Society.

"It [the study] found a relationship between total cholesterol and heart disease," Thun says. Over the years, there has been debate about whether high cholesterol is a cause or simply a marker of higher heart disease risks. But studies like this one helped raise the red flag about high-cholesterol foods, such as red meat.

Then, the evidence started mounting that people who ate daily servings of red meat increased their risks of developing certain cancers. For colon cancer, studies show that people who eat the most have about double the risk compared with people who eat the least red meat.

"That's been found in lots of studies," says Thun, "so it's pretty well-accepted."

Paleo enthusiast John Durant says he has thought about these studies and has heard the health experts, but he's not worried. He says lots of the people in these big epidemiological studies are sedentary and overweight.

He may be eating more red meat than the experts recommend, but he believes his paleo lifestyle, which includes running barefoot in Central Park, helps keep him thin, active and healthy. And he's not alone ? the movement is attracting some medical professionals.

Because there are no studies of people who've been following the paleo diet, Thun says, it's hard to evaluate. "There's just not been enough people eating one kind of paleolithic diet to tell."

As for the rest of us who want to know how much red meat is too much, the best evidence suggests that cutting back to two to three servings a week is a good guide.

NFL referee, knocked down by linemen, rises above cancer

If he's doing his job, an NFL official will largely go unnoticed. He will make sure the rules are followed, of course, yet blend into the background as much as possible.

Tony Corrente is anything but invisible.

The longtime NFL referee learned that as he battled throat cancer last fall, a football season that was the worst ? and somehow the best ? of his life.

"I've got big boxes filled with letters, cards and trinkets people sent me," said Corrente, 60, a retired high school teacher from La Mirada who has worked NFL games since 1995 and doubles as the officiating coordinator for thePac-12Conference.

"When it got to the point it hurt too bad to swallow, I would just look at those cards. Every one of them was a card of encouragement, a card of prayer. Somebody told me, 'You didn't get all those cards because you were a jerk.' I cannot even begin to measure how that encouragement helped me through my toughest days."

These aren't easy times for NFL officials, anyway. The league has locked them out and has replacement officials ready in case the labor dispute spills into the regular season, as it did in 2001. Talks between the sides have broken off, and the NFL Referees Assn. filed an unfair labor practice charge against the league with the National Labor Relations Board.

Like his colleagues, Corrente is concerned about what all this means. "I'm just hoping the integrity of the game doesn't get compromised," he said.

But the situation doesn't consume his every thought as it might have a year ago. In light of the nightmare he's been through over the past nine months, he's thankful for every moment.

"When you can wake up in the morning," he said, "every day is a good day."

Doctors told Corrente in May that they could not find any evidence of cancer remaining in him. His prognosis is good, with his next checkup scheduled for late August. That was the culmination of months of chemotherapy and radiation treatments that not only made him horribly sick but robbed him of his taste buds ? "Food was repulsive to me" ? and made downing supplement drinks feel "like swallowing broken glass." To this point, he has been able to avoid surgery and a feeding tube, although he's down to 180 pounds from an already trim 194.

Corrente missed four games near the end of the season when the chemotherapy made him too sick to work. He returned for the final two games of the regular season, and worked the playoff game between Detroit and New Orleans.

It was a bizarre string of circumstances in September that led to the discovery of a tumor in Corrente's throat.

While working a season-opening game between Baltimore and Pittsburgh, he found himself in the middle of scuffling linemen and was knocked to the ground. He fell hard on his backside, and his head hit the turf. He immediately felt soreness in his neck and back but didn't feel dizzy.

Baltimore's trainer cleared him to return to the game but advised him to take 800 milligrams of whatever over-the-counter pain medication was available in the officials' locker room. So after the game, Corrente had the option of taking Tylenol or Motrin. He chose Motrin, which he later learned was significant. He flew home and took more before he went to bed.

The next two mornings he coughed up some blood. He went to his physician, but his insurance wouldn't allow Dr. Susan Sleep to run all the tests she recommended.

After another game and more Motrin the following Sunday, Corrente woke to blood on his pillow. He then saw a specialist, who threaded a tiny camera through his nose and down his throat.

"At one point he turned the camera to the other side of my throat, and I say, 'Ew, what's that?'" Corrente recalled. "It just looked totally gross. He just looked at me and said, 'Sir, that's cancer.'"

Doctors later told Corrente that the Motrin acted as a blood thinner, whereas Tylenol wouldn't have, and that his coughing had broken one of the vessels in the tumor. That, by pure luck, led to an earlier diagnosis.

The tumor was about the size of Corrente's thumb when it was discovered, but it covered nearly half his throat by the time he started chemotherapy seven weeks later.

After Corrente had gone through his first round of chemotherapy and had lost his full head of black hair ? he has since regrown it ? he worked a Baltimore game at the end of the season and got a chance to thank the linemen who had accidentally knocked him over. It was center Matt Birk and tackle Michael Oher.

"I told them, 'I want to thank you guys; because of the unintended consequences and me getting knocked down, you probably saved my life,'" Corrente said. "And they just stood there dumbfounded. Matt Birk got a little tear in his eye and said, 'This is the last thing in the world I would have ever expected.'"

For part of his treatment, Corrente moved to Houston for several weeks to be treated at MD Anderson Cancer Center by a team of specialists that included Randal Weber, Merrill Kies and David Rosenthal.

For Corrente, it has been months upon months of the unexpected, both bad and good.

There was the moment he finally broke down, tearfully telling his crew about the cancer. They later asked him what food he'd miss most when the chemotherapy would eventually steal his taste buds. He said he'd miss Thanksgiving dinner most. So the next weekend ? still weeks before the holiday ? they surprised him with a Thanksgiving feast.

Or there was the time in late November, before the Colts played host to the Panthers, that the sidelined Peyton Manning called him over. The two have known each other for years, although their relationship is more cordial than close. (Corrente was the referee when Manning and the Colts beat Chicago in the Super Bowl.)

"I extended my hand to shake his, and he just gives me this bear hug and says, 'I want you to know that not only am I praying for you, but the entire Colts organization is praying for you,'" said Corrente, pleasantly stunned by the embrace.

"How did you know?" said Corrente, his veil of anonymity lifted.

"Tony," Manning said, "we all know."

Japan unveils 10% energy-saving target

Japan on Friday said its industrial heartland must cut electricity use by 10 percent this summer as the country grapples with a power shortage in the aftermath of last year's Fukushima atomic crisis.

A week after ordering the restart of two nuclear reactors, ending a brief period without any atomic power generation, the government said the expected shortfall would not be quite as bad as earlier thought.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda and other senior ministers had previously said they wanted a 15 percent cut in peak electricity usage in and around the industrial hub of Osaka in western Japan from July to September.

But the bringing back online of two idled reactors at Oi has eased the expected crunch. The reactors are due to begin generating power in late July.

A power-saving order was issued last year as nuclear plants began to be shuttered in response to public disquiet over the technology in the months following the tsunami-sparked meltdowns at Fukushima.

But the cuts sparked complaints from businesses and fears manufacturers would move production overseas.

Prior to the quake-tsunami sparked Fukushima crisis, nuclear power supplied a third of Japan's electricity needs. In the months since, power companies have been increasingly dependent on imported -- and expensive -- fossil fuels.

Policymakers fear Japan's electricity demand could outstrip supply as summer temperatures soar and air-conditioners get cranked up, a worry for companies already battling uncertain economic times both at home and abroad.

Laser-scanning bot builds 3-D map of ancient Roman sewers

8 hrs.

Roman archaeologists are using an interesting new tool to map and study one of the ancient city's little-appreciated features: Its sewers. They've deployed a?remotely?controlled rover called an "archeo-robot" to help them create a detailed and complete map of the extensive waterways.

Ancient Rome's "cloaca maxima," Latin for greatest or largest sewer, was a marvel at the time of its use, permitting great quantities of waste water to flow away from the city center. It still functions today, draining rainwater from the historic Forum area of Rome.

A team was recently brought in to study and map the main sewer and its several secondary tunnels. To do it properly, they decided to use a little remote bot equipped with high-definition cameras, atmospheric sensors and a laser-scanning system that would capture the pipes and stones in 3-D. This will allow them to get very exact dimensions as well as an explorable model.

The results are quite cool-looking, and should be of utility to scholars and historians who have often wondered about the cloaca maxima and its construction. You can see a short video of some of the data they've collected here.

The group doing the work is called Indissoluble, and they've placed much more information regarding the archeo-robot on the project's site.

Chinese consumers think Apple is treating them unfairly

Chinese consumers think Apple is treating them unfairly

An insurgence of complaints from Chinese consumers due to ?unfair maintenance terms? by Apple has prompted various Chinese consumer organizations to deem Apple as an unjust company.?

The outburst of unsatisfied customers came about when Chinese consumers were (among other unjustly treatment) given an ultimatum to either pick up their repaired iPhone and iPad within a certain time frame or else they give up their ownership to the devices.? According to globaltimes.cn, a local complaint center in Tianjin, alone, received 256 complaints against Apple from the beginning of 2012 to the end of May.? Qiu Baochang, president the legal panel at China Consumers? Association, says that Apple doesn?t lack in innovation, but they definitely lack in the consumer support and appreciation department.?

?The reason why Apple can neglect consumers' interests is because it has innovative products to win popularity, but protection of consumers' interests is more important at present,? he says.

A Chinese resident (surenamed ?Bi?) has already gone as far as to file the country?s first consumer lawsuit against Apple, because Apple shortened the warrantee period on his product--which, under regulations has to be at least one year.

According to Bi?s lawyer, Bi contacted Apple?s customer service but nothing was resolved, and now he is seeking for the law to take his side to protect his consumer?s rights.? In that same stretch, Bi?s lawyer also ?hopes the lawsuit can help change the company?s (Apple) attitude toward Chinese consumer.?

Toshiba 50L5200U

The Toshiba L5200U series consists of barebones HDTVs that do a few things very well, but lack many of the basic features found on similarly priced models. Illuminated by edge-mounted LED backlighting, the 49.1-inch 50L5200U we tested produced solid, accurate colors and offered nice wide viewing angles, but contrast ratio was on the low side. At $1,099.99 (direct), it?s relatively affordable for a 50-inch-class HDTV, but for that price, you're not getting any Web connectivity. Overall, there are better deals to be had in this price range.

Design and Features
The 50L5200U sports super-thin (0.6-inch) black bezels that give it a sleek, streamlined look, but it lacks the slice of chrome finish found on its sibling, the 55TL515U ($1,999.99, 3.5 stars). The bottom bezel is slightly wider at 0.8 inches and sports a small Toshiba logo in its center. The right side of the slim, 1.8-inch cabinet holds touch-sensitive Power, Channel Up/Down, Volume Up/Down, Menu, and Input buttons that are a bit too small and too sensitive. The remote is your best bet for tweaking picture settings.

The rear of the cabinet is home to a somewhat stingy selection of I/O ports. Left-facing connectors include three HDMI inputs, stereo analog audio inputs, a PC audio input, analog and digital audio outputs, and a USB port. Component video inputs, a PC (VGA) video input, and a coaxial TV jack face downward. You only get the three HDMI ports with this model (most HDTVs offer four), and unlike the similarly priced Samsung PN51D550C1F ($1,299.99, 3.5 stars), there's no Ethernet port for Internet connectivity or 3D support.

The 40-pound cabinet is supported by a glossy black rectangular stand that is sturdy enough, but doesn't swivel. The two 7-watt down-firing speakers, driven by Audyssey?s Premium Audio Technology, provide better-than-average output and are both loud and full-sounding. Granted, you don?t get the deep booming bass of a dedicated subwoofer but the boost gives the sound some much-needed low end.

The black remote is compact at 6.9 inches and you get 35 buttons plus four navigation keys and an Enter key. None of the smallish buttons are backlit. The bottom of the remote has moderately sharp edges where it meets your hand. They?re not sharp enough to do damage, but they?re not very comfortable either.

Picture settings include they typical brightness, contrast, backlight, tint, color, and sharpness controls, plus color temperature and backlight control. The ClearFrame 120Hz switch helps reduce motion blur and the Film Stabilization feature helps eliminate shaky video, but video purists will want to leave them off. Additional settings include gamma adjustment, picture size, aspect ratio, noise reduction, and Cinema Mode for viewing 24 fps content. There are five preset picture modes including Dynamic, Standard, Movie, PC, and Preference (custom). As is usually the case, Movie mode produced the best all-around picture out of the box.

Performance
We tested the 50L5200U using images from the DisplayMate suite of HDTV diagnostic tests, SpectraCal?s CalMAN 4 software, and a Konica-Minolta CS-200 Chromameter. After a basic darkroom calibration the set produced a peak brightness level of 219.89 cd/m2 and a black level reading of 0.05 cd/m2. The resulting contrast ratio of 4,380:1 pales in comparison to the Editors' Choice Vizio M3D550KD's ($1,429.99, 4 stars) 18,237:1 and the Samsung UN46ES8000F's ($2,999.99, 3.5 stars) 28,640:1, both of which are also LED-lit HDTVs.

Color accuracy was quite good; as noted on the CIE Chromaticity chart below, reds and blues were very close to perfect while greens were slightly off. The slightly heavy green level did not cause any noticeable tinting, and did not interfere with the 50L5200U?s excellent flesh-tone reproduction.

The 50L5200U did a fine job of eliminating motion blur while displaying scenes from the movie 2012 on Blu-ray disc. Image detail was sharp and off-angle viewing was superb for an LED panel. There was some loss of detail in dark scenes but not enough to make the picture look muddy. I did notice some backlight bleed around the corners, however,?which is fairly common with edge-lit HDTVs.

The 50L5200U used only 80 watts of power while being tested, which is good but not as efficient as the 55-inch?LG 55LM6700 ($2,299.99, 4 stars), which has a larger screen and used just 67 watts of power in our tests. There is a sleep timer but that?s all you get in terms of power-saving options.

Conclusion
The Toshiba 50L5200U is an attractive 50-inch HDTV that delivers accurate colors and solid viewing angles, but it doesn?t offer much in the way of features compared with other similarly priced models. If you?re looking for an affordable, full-featured LED-backlit HDTV that has 3D capabilities and comes with four HDMI ports and Internet connectivity, our Editors? Choice for budget HDTVs, the 55-inch Vizio M3D550KD, is the way to go.

GOOGLE VOICELESS: Larry Page To Skip Big ... - Business Insider

Google CEO Larry Page has lost his voice and had to skip today's annual meeting, chairman Eric Schmidt told shareholders.

His voice was so gone, that his body couldn't show up either. Interesting!

During this meeting Google approved the creation of a new class of non-voting stock that preserves its cofounders' control, the AP wryly pointed out. Translation: ordinary shareholders continue not to have much of a voice.

Page is also going to miss next week's Google I/O conference for developers, which is usually a major occasion for rollouts of new technology.

And his quiet period will stretch into the middle of next month, when Google announces second-quarter earnings.?

That's an unusually long recovery period for a simple case of hoarseness.?

Google spokesman Jim Prosser told us that Page's condition is "not serious" but that Page had been told to rest his voice. That's a good thing because as we reported earlier, Google has not insured itself against the loss of Larry Page.

It's never fun to lose your voice, but we can't help thinking: Page hates public speaking. He didn't speak at last year's I/O conference, which took place shortly after he returned to the CEO role. We can't seriously believe he's broken up about missing this one.

The negatives of business growth | International Business News ...

All companies like growth. All companies want growth. All companies need growth. Without growth companies will struggle to survive. So, it is not surprising when companies experiencing growth are jumping with joy.

However, besides the tricky bit of actually achieving growth, there are also other factors which businesses often forget about. These include:

1. Growth does mean change

With growth comes change and with change comes complications. Nobody likes change. It needs careful planning, monitoring and the right type of leadership and staff. None of these are easy and none can happen overnight. Companies must be prepared for when growth does happen.

2. Growth is evolutionary

Growth causes evolution. Business models must be able to adapt to the changes within the business. Managers and employees who are following these plans must also evolve to ensure business growth remains a positive thing.

3. Growth requires continuous learning and improvement

All employees within the business must be open to ongoing learning, adapting, experimenting and improvement. Combining all of these with the increased workloads that growth brings can be difficult.

4. Growth requires focus and setting priorities

When a company achieves growth it is important that the cause of the growth is recognised and that this selling point takes the main stage and focus of a business?s selling points.

5. Growth may need new processes

Usually with growth, companies need to expand. To ensure the company maintains the right standards, step by step instructions on how to do things are important. This will help to minimise mistakes being made while keeping customers happy by providing a consistent service.

6. Growth creates risks

Like everything in business, there are risks. All businesses are faced with risk, whether they are experiencing growth or not. However, with growth come stressed and often overworked employees, strained processes and finances and undervalued clients. Identifying and understanding these clicks is critical to ensure growth success.

In spite of all of the above factors, growth is a good thing, a great thing for businesses. By simply thinking about what might go wrong, you?ll be ahead of the growth game!

Belkin announces @TV, Slingbox-esque media streamer and companion app

Belkin TV

Belkin has unveiled @TVPlus, a media streamer that jacks into your home theater and pumps episodes of Community (or, other things, we guess) to your smartphone, tablet or laptop through the internet. Packing a built-in WiFi radio, you'll connect to it on your travels with the @TV app, which is capable of recording live TV straight to your mobile device for offline viewing. The app is free for tablets ($12.99 for smartphones) while the box itself will set you back $150 when it arrives in mid-July.

LG launches 'Quick Voice' on its phones in Korea, goes head to head with S Voice and Siri

After Apple and Samsung have made their Siri and S Voice features keystones of recent smartphone releases, it wasn't long before other manufacturers jumped in and now it's LG's turn with Quick Voice for its Android phones (we'll see how Apple responds to that). Just announced in Korea and rolling out soon for various members of the Optimus family like the Vu and LTE II, it brings natural voice recognition to commonly used functions like searching, setting up appointments or pulling up videos on YouTube. For Korean users it's even tuned to check dates on the lunar calendar, although there's no word yet on when or if it will arrive elsewhere.

Craig Kanalley: How Reading the Bible in 100 Days Changed My Life

I'm a slow reader.

This is something I need to be very open about early on to properly set the scene here.

I'm a slow reader for many reasons. One, I never learned the trick of speed reading. Two, I like to try to understand what I'm reading, even if it means reading and re-reading multiple times. Three, besides reading the news online (constantly), I don't read that much, period.

But there's something else you should know about me. I don't shy away from a challenge. When I'm determined to accomplish something, I see it through. And when I get obsessed with something, I can get really obsessed.

With that in mind, let me tell you about the state of my life in March 2012, when I began a project that I'd argue dramatically changed my life, for the better.

Things weren't going so well. I wasn't happy. Sparing you of the boring details, I was posting Facebook status updates like this:

"When life gives you lemons, make lemonades. When you go through tough times, have faith things will get better. Never dwell on the past; instead, look to the future. Thank you family and friends for being there for me."

Nice words, yes, but those who know me well picked up on the fact (rightly) things weren't quite right in my life.

I felt I needed a shake-up in my life. And that's what happened. I decided to make a career change, abruptly leaving my job at NBC News, and coming back to where I was happy in a prior phase of my life, The Huffington Post (thanks for allowing me back!).

It was risky. For one thing, you're not supposed to leave a job after just three months. It was a period of transition. And with that transition, I wanted God to be with me.

So, I started reading the Bible. This is something I had tried to do many times before. I was raised Catholic, but I could never find myself to read the whole thing; it's just so long, and I'm a slow reader.

But I felt my life was in a potentially perilous situation. What if going back to HuffPost didn't work out like I hoped it would? I turned to prayer. And I told myself I'd read the whole Bible for 100 days. Easy enough with technology -- I could track 1 percent of the Bible read per day through iBooks on my iPad. I decided to tell the world and update my progress each day with a Tumblr, so others could hold me accountable if they saw I stopped posting (I never did stop).

What Happened Next

Now, say what you will, whether you're religious or not, but I'm happy to report that those trying times, and stormy clouds, quickly evaporated as I started reading the Bible. I began reading Genesis during my last week at NBC News. My first day back at HuffPost shortly thereafter was amazing. I felt so welcome and truly at home again.

In between, I had the opportunity to take a rare vacation, as I never took time off when I started at NBC News. During the trip, I met a girl on a train who made me smile and exchanged notes with her. (Nothing came of that for those hoping for a more romantic story, she had a boyfriend, but at the time it gave me a nice lift in spirits.)

Then, when I got to Chicago, I somehow landed a front-row seat, at the last minute, to a hockey game against Blackhawks rival the Vancouver Canucks. (Hockey is my favorite sport. Vancouver is my second favorite team to my hometown Buffalo Sabres. Vancouver scored less than 30 seconds into the game, on my side of the ice. It was a thrill, captured on video.)

Back in New York, one April day, I was walking down Broadway, and one of my favorite players growing up (former Yankee) Bernie Williams was there meeting people, and I got to meet him. Days later, actress Jenna Fischer (Pam on The Office) favorited one of my tweets after I had the chance to see her husband speak in the flesh on their new movie. Days later, someone direct messaged me on Twitter out of the blue and asked if I wanted to go to a Yankees game and meet Yankees catcher Russell Martin. Do I? To top it all off, he personally drove me to Manhattan after the game from Yankee Stadium.

These things just don't happen. You need to have some serious luck. Or somebody upstairs looking out for you (you never know, right?).

Reading the Bible daily on my iPad was becoming so immersed in my mind, body, spirit and part of my routine that at times, I physically wanted to kneel on the subway in prayer as I read on the commute to and from work. I never did that, but I did find a routine of standing all the time as I read, and balancing myself without holding onto anything. I'm not sure why, it just became a thing. Perhaps it wasn't just physically balancing myself but a sense of being spiritually and mentally balanced as I read too; it was refreshing.

Nearly everything around me seemed to take on great meaning, spiritual meaning. I'm not sure if I was overthinking things, going crazy, or something was really happening. For example, this random chair showed up one evening on the subway as I was reading the Bible. I had never seen that before! Was it a spirit of some kind? My deceased grandfather? God? I thought a lot about things like that.

Another subway encounter: A woman gave me a ping pong ball eye ball. An image and story you need to see to believe, documented here. It had "Always believe in angels" written on it. Needless to say, that one got me thinking.

More good things happened.

I went for a walk one day and somehow got this photo of the Verrazano Bridge in New York.

I got to witness a beautiful First Holy Communion ceremony that reminded me of my childhood (not even realizing I was about to attend one, just stumbling on it).

I don't know, it's the little things in life; and these things were much more visible to me than usual.

I was also more adventurous, willing to experiment more than usual.

Well known as a picky eater, I tried sushi for the first time in my life in April.

I gave out my phone number publicly on the Internet and answered a steady flow of texts and calls. I wrote about it.

Weeks later, I did it again.

I started smiling as I walked around the city (who does that?). I got weird looks.

And every opportunity I posted inspirational messages to Facebook. This one was well-liked.

During these past 100 days, my dad randomly found a deal online for a trip to Ireland, a trip for one, from NYC. Knowing it's a lifelong dream of mine, he emailed it to me. I said OK, wow, this is meant to be, and after some research (yep, this was legit) booked the trip.

I took a DNA test and another dream of mine -- literally one of my biggest dreams of the past 10 years (genealogy's a big hobby of mine) -- I found a living relative with my last name, living in Ireland today. For context, most Irish records have burned in fires so it's nearly impossible to find family there. I knew DNA was my one hope. It so happened a relative took the test too and I found him. I hope to meet him when I go to Ireland in the fall.

My New Worldview & Giving Back

I started realizing my view on life was changing, ever so slightly, and as all these good things happened, I was thinking, wait, really? Why? And what do I have to do in return?

I was becoming more spiritual, more reflective. I pondered the meaning of life more. I wrote a post on the importance of being humble and humility and constantly asked myself during these past 100 days how can I help others more, do more for others?

I made sure to block out more of my time that was usually for myself for others. I spoke with countless students and young professionals these last few months, including a few journalism classes, heard their stories and shared advice. I've talked with folks on the phone, helped strangers around the city (specifically looking for those who seemed in need, confused or just looking to chat) and helped strangers online too.

I surprised my family last-minute by coming home for Memorial Day Weekend. We went to an amusement park like old times.

Now a lot of these experiences are experiences I'd argue I'll never forget. Especially being such a transitional part of my life. (We've all been there, right? The mid-20s, what am I doing with my life?)

And the words I read in the Bible were so strong, so meaningful, and they spoke so loudly to me that they seemed to jump off the page. There were many "aha" moments, epiphanies of sorts. Feelings of, YES, I've felt this way before, or YES, I can relate with my own life. The fact that a book so many hundreds of years old can speak to someone like that in this modern world is really amazing, in my opinion.

I just want to thank God for somehow giving me this idea to read the Bible, cover to cover. It made me reflect a ton, learn a ton and I absolutely feel more spiritual, and more happy. As I've said, I also have strived to put myself secondary to the happiness of others, especially now that I'm happy myself.

I'm on a mission now. Because even though these 100 days are now in the past, I can still carry out all that I've read. This Tumblr, with the 100 verses that spoke most loudly to me (one for each 1 percent of The Bible), is something I can constantly refer back to for words of wisdom that I can apply to my life every day to be a better man and a better human being. In fact, I'm going to put them into the physical world in the next few days, either print them out or write them all out on poster board, so I can see them all together every day in a prominent spot where I live.

Whether you're religious or not, this is what I experienced reading the Bible for the past 100 days. I struggled many times with this wrap-up post. But this is what I experienced. And say what you want, but I kind of feel it's a modern miracle my life has turned around the way it has. I'm feeling so much better and I now have meaning in my life, a clear mission as I said. This is what I sought out for when I started this project. I couldn't ask for anything more.

As the Book of Revelation (the last book I read and for that reason most on my mind today, Day 100 of this project), says we'll never know what hour this world will end. But it will end. It's an important perspective, everything we know in this world will come to pass. It's why I want to live every day to its fullest, and continue to practice what I've learned these past 100 days in my daily life. I hope you'll consider reading the Bible too, and maybe you'll experience similar feelings with an open mind.
