Looking For Suggestions On Search Engine Optimization? Look No ...

SEO can be hard to understand if you are new at it, but it is essential for a online business. If you have the correct tools and information, anyone can gear up their site to get more traffic and rank higher in the search engine results.

Do this by forming a robots. txt file and including it within the root directory. The search engine is then unable to access selected files featured on your site.

As with any other business, a SEO company must be a right match for you prior to committing to their services. See what their expertise is in your field, what their essential techniques are, how long results will take, and how much they will charge you. In addition, ask if you can view a portfolio of some of their completed projects, and request contact information for references. An upstanding, high quality company will have no problem with this.

After deciding on your keywords, be sure to place them in the title of your web page. Your title should be intelligent and relevant, because it is what search engine users will first see of your site. People will click on the link to your site since it will fit the user?s search results.

As you write your keywords, remember to think as a consumer would. Determine ordinary keywords or terms that people will use in searching.

Search Engine

When performing search engine optimization, each page of your website must include meta description tags. A good description tag will make your site stand out on the search engine results page. Describe your site and why people should click in as few words as possible using the meta tag. Visitors will see this information and want to click your site, and even may help you beat out pages that rank higher.

Google has the power to penalize your site for creating redundant content. Target a different demographic with new and unique information.

Always try to make sure that you have good description tags. The content in this area shouldn?t exceed 30 words. Never go over 100 KB for this particular page.

Search engine optimization is just another way of drawing in customers. A lot of businesses do not realize this fact.

If your visitor spends a lot of time on your page it will increase your rank. The content on your site is important to keep customers coming back.

You should avoid creating entire pages that are filled with nothing but links. Add them into your content, so that they blend with the rest of the page. Search engines often ignore link pages and readers have no interest in them. Including your links within your text gives search engines the ability to index your content and also give your site a professional style.

Search Engine

You can experience an increased number of search engine hits by inputting plural forms of keywords. Keyword stemming is used by some of the search engines. If you use a word such as bank, the search engine might not find the words banking or banker! Use keyword stemming by using a longer version of a word, such as ?accounting? to get results for ?accountant.?

To improve your search engine optimization efforts, think about becoming a member of the BBB (Better Business Bureau), as well as the Chamber of Commerce in your area. By joining these listings, your articles will be brought up more often. Also, if you are a part of this Better Business Bureau and have good ratings on their site, your customers will trust you even more.

Remain patient when attempting to boost your site?s SEO value, remember that it?s not going to all happen overnight. Significant changes and massive traffic will not come overnight. Especially if you have a brand new website, the optimization process may not show results for months. In this respect, an online business is no different than a traditional one. Reputations develop over time.

Consider pay-per-click arrangements as a means to lucrative affiliate marketing. This is a simple system with low pay, but you can make money from it.

Make sure every image on your site has the descriptive ?alt? tag. That is the best way to optimize the SEO value for that page. These tags take the place of images if the image cannot be displayed. What matters is that the search engines identify and index the alt tags so that the keywords are able to improve page rank.

Search Engines

Each page on your website should be optimized for one keyword phrase. Including multiple keywords per page can give the page a scattered feel. Your readers will appreciate content that is truly informative and fun to read. Aiming at a search engine may only lose you return visitors. Search engine optimization is overshadowed by a loyal readership.

Many website owners forget to proofread their content. It is crucial that your website is easy to read for both search engines and customers. If you don?t take the time to run spell-check and grammar check on your site, search engines will penalize you.

As this article has said, search engine optimization knowledge is an important tool for internet business people who want to make a profit. If you utilize the information that you just read, you will have the right tools to start optimizing your website. All in all, you need more than SEO to make a successful website; you actually need a well-designed website to back it up.

Personal Finance Tips With The Power To Change The Way You ...

You must try to be as careful as possible with your hard earned money. You may not know the most efficient way to start saving your money rather than spending like a drunken sailor. You might not want to ask because you do not want to seem like you are not responsible, but chances are they are having issues too. Read this article for tips on personal finance and improve your situation!

Plan at least one calender day every month to pay bills. You won?t spend the entire day paying down bills, obviously, but the payment of your debt does warrant its own day. Mark the day(s) on your calendar, and be faithful in following it. Missing this day could cause a bad domino effect.

Avoiding debt as much as possible is one of the fundamentals of keeping a tight grip on your personal finances. You may need to get a loan for a car or a home. However, individuals should not put themselves in positions where they must depend upon credit to pay for daily expenses.

TIP! If you find yourself using a bank debit card, consider switching to a credit card. If you apply and are approved for a credit card, use them on day-to-day purchases, such as gas and groceries.

Try to save money on sheets, blankets and pillow by buying them at a discount store. Not only do these stores sell the items cheaper, the products are still the same quality as what you would buy in other places. Buying things for the lowest possible prices will help you improve your finances.

If a debt collector is asking you for money, try negotiating with them. They most likely bought your debt from the original company for a much lower price. Paying a little of what you have to pay can help them still make a profit. Use that information to rid yourself of debt for very little money.

Credit Rating

Try using the automatic withdrawal plan at your bank so that you will automatically have money transferred into your savings account at regular intervals. This will help you pay yourself and start saving the money you need every month. This may also help you with having money for large events, like vacations or a wedding.

TIP! You may not be satisfied with your job and your income at this point, but having some income is better than having nothing at all. A lot of people think that they should just quit so that they can make more money but that?s not good if they don?t have anything else lined up.

Pay your utility bills in a timely manner. Paying them late can damage your credit rating. Your credit rating will suffer if you pay late and you may also pay late fees too. It?s not worth the headaches that come from paying late, so whenever possible, pay your bills on time.

Be positive that you can truly trust the person that you are entrusting your life savings with. Verify their references and be certain that they are candid when discussing your finances. You want to be informed before making any decisions.

Credit Cards

Even if you?re careful with money, you can run into unexpected financial issues. Find out as much information as possible about late fees and grace periods. Before signing a lease, make sure you are aware of your options.

TIP! Regardless of a person?s financial situation, it is important to have a savings account with liquidity. This type of account should be in the form of a high yield account.

Instead of only using card that is about to be maxed out you can use two or so credit cards. The interest from multiple credit cards is typically lower than a single card that is maxed out. This can help you build your score and not hurt it if you manage your credit lines the right way.

Make a large wall calender that maps out all of your fixed monthly payments, due dates, and billing cycles in one easy place. It won?t make any difference if you fail to receive a bill notification; you will still be able to meet all your due dates with this method. Avoid needless late fees whenever possible.

After reading this guide, you will be able to better understand and you will realize how simple it is to manage your personal finances. If you read something that did not make sense to you, spend some extra time looking into it more until you full understand the concept.

A home and a car are probably going to be the largest purchases you have to make. Your monthly payments on these items, including interest, usually makes up the biggest chunk of your budget. Try to pay them off quickly by making extra payments or applying your tax refund toward the principal.

Lest we forget: US military still uses horses and bayonets

President Barack Obama, in a pithy riposte to Governor Mitt Romney during the October 22 presidential debate, alluded to obvious changes in military technology of the last century. Republican candidate Romney supports a buildup of the nation's military, particularly the Air Force and Navy, as a means of assuring the security of the country as it faces increased challenges from piracy and Chinese regional ambitions.?

When Romney noted that the U.S. Navy now has fewer ships than it did in 1917, Obama responded that the U.S. has "fewer horses and bayonets" than it did nearly one hundred years ago.?

Obama's quip was true enough and certainly would have made points among high school sophmores. But he did not indicate clearly how he will deal with China, aside from talk about "pressure" and engagement. He batted aside concerns that China's ambitions are growing, just as the United States is becoming further indebted to that Asian country.

As a point of fact, bayonets and horses, as well as swords, still form a compliment in the American panoply. Horses draw the caissons bearing the mortal remains of American service personnel to their final rest at Arlington Cemetery. The infantry guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier still wield bayonets along with their rifles. Some soldiers and marines still receive training in the use of the bayonet as part of their martial arts. Bayonets are featured as part of the the 'Warrior's Cross' that plays a part in tributes to fallen soldiers and marines. Swords are still part of the inventory of arms in the Navy, for instance, and are found displayed in the ward rooms of various warships.

Obama's dismissiveness may have won some points with his followers, and he still might pull off this election. But Obama should bear in mind that witty remarks such as his are lost in a world increasingly violent and unpredictable. Unfortunately, his words will not be as persuasive with China - or Iran - as the point of a bayonet.

How Can I Win Her Love Back - 5 Strategies To Win Back Lost Love

How Can I Win Her Love Back - 5 Strategies To Win Back Lost Love

Dear Kurt

How can I win her back?

Here's what happened. We'd been going out for about 6 months and everything was going smooth and our relationship was starting to get a little more serious.

Then out of no where she broke up with me. I was totally shocked and didn't know what to do. She said it was because we fought too much and that we were getting too serious too soon. I really care about her and want to get her back. Is there anything I can do?

- Broken Hearted

Dear Broken Hearted:

Out of all the emotions that we have, love is the strongest and most powerful one so when a relationship endsit stands to reason that it's going to hurt quite a bit. Now despite the pain that you're going through there are things you can do to win back the one you love but you need to know what to do and how to do it properly.

When it comes to getting someone back after a breakup, the most important thing you can do is to get them looking your way and thinking about you again. This article will give you five strategies you can use that will help get your ex thinking about you again and hopefully get you back together again.

1. The first thing you need to do is be honest with yourself about the relationship and the part you played in the breakup. I know it's not pleasant but it needs to be done. Your girlfriend said she broke up with you because you fought all the time. If this is true then it needs to be addressed by you. This is not the time to point fingers and lay blame, instead use your time apart to analyze the relationship. In fact I recommend that you get a pen and paper and write it out. List all the things things that might have contributed to the breakup and see which ones you can change. If you want to get her back you need to address this before you do anything else.

2. The next thing you need to do when it comes to getting your ex' attention again is to be dependable. Even though you've broken up you still need to be there when and if she needs you. Just be her friend and show her that you're someone that she can depend on and in return she'll start to see you as someone worth being with. Now this doesn't mean that you're going to get back together right away, but being depandable lays the ground work and the foundation for restoring the relationship you once had.

3. The third thing you should do if you want to get your ex to start thinking about you again is to encourage and support them. One of the things that people miss most during a breakup is the support they got from their significant other so if the opportunity arises, be her personal cheerleader. For example, if she's got a job interview, send her a quick 'good luck' email or something along those lines. Either way you want to show her that you've got her back and have her best intetests at heart.

4. Listen to her. Chances are she's going to call you at some point, especially if you've cut off all contact with her. When she does call, make sure you listen to what she is saying and VALIDATE her concerns. Not feeling validated or understood is the leading cause for fights in a relationship and since this was her main concern with you during the breakup it's something that you need to focus on here. Listen to what she is saying and take some mental notes and get your foot in the door.

5. Get a life. Don't sit around and sit on the sidelines. Instead get out there and live it up. Go out, have fun and rediscover yourself. This accomplishes 3 things. First it gives you self confidence which makes you more attractive to your ex. Second it reverses depression by taking your mind off things by keeping you busy. Third is that it gives you peace of mind by giving you both space and time which are key elements when it comes to dealing with your emotions after a breakup.

The Bottom Line

The key to win her back especially when she's dumped you is to get her looking your way and thinking about you again.

If you follow the 5 points in this article you will greatly increase your chances of getting back together because you will have improved as a person since the breakup which will make you more attractive to her.

Paper Examines Historical Origins of America's Mortgage Laws ...

WASHINGTON, DC ? October 23, 2012 ? (RealEstateRama) ? Today the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) released a paper entitled, ?The Historical Origins of America?s Mortgage Laws,? conducted by Andra Ghent, Assistant Professor of Real Estate at Arizona State University and sponsored by MBA?s Research Institute for Housing America.

This paper examines the different legal frameworks for mortgage markets in different states, focusing on how and when they came into existence, including the British influence on laws in some of the older states, with a particular emphasis on foreclosures, including judicial vs. non-judicial regimes, redemption rights and deficiency judgments. Ghent concludes that mortgage laws in America are a patchwork driven by path dependence, rather than a coordinated effort or a reaction to some economic event or condition.

?This research shows that, historically speaking, mortgage laws in this country are not the result of intentional design, nor were they necessarily driven by a consistent set of economic events or circumstances,? said Mike Fratantoni, RIHA?s Executive Director. ?As a result, there may well be significant gains from ongoing efforts to harmonize these laws across the states.?

?With the exception of anti-deficiency statutes, mortgage laws seem to be the outcome of path-dependent quirks in the wording of various proposed statutes and decisions of individual judges, said Andra Ghent, Assistant Professor, W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University. ?Mortgage laws have been extremely slow to change, and while this slow adjustment is perhaps necessary to maintain the integrity of the rule of law in a common law legal system, the result is a diverse set of laws that seem poorly suited to a mortgage market that is increasingly integrated across state borders.?

Topics covered in the paper include:

? Mortgages and Foreclosures in America Today
? The English Origins of American Mortgages
? Title vs. Lien Theory
? The Historical Development of Foreclosure Procedures
? Redemption Rights
? Restrictions on Deficiency Judgments and the One Action Rule

Jennifer Lopez Has ?Lots Of Love? for London

Giving attention to her eagerly awaiting fans, Jennifer Lopez took time to sign a few autographs while leaving her temporary digs in London, England on Tuesday (October 23).

The ?On The Floor? songstress looked city chic in a white and black ensemble as she made her way out of the posh Charlotte Street Hotel with her beau, Casper Smart, in tow.

Clearly having a good time during her tour stop across the pond, J Lo happily tweeted, ?LONDON! WOW! Thank you for an amazing night! #untilnexttime. Lots of love always! #DanceAgainWorldTour2012.?

Amidst her time on the road, the 43-year-old Latina explained that, although she has gone through some tough times in her love life, she?s still staying positive.

Expanding on her optimistic attitude, Lopez said, ?You can?t color the whole world because of your bad experiences. I?m not going to brand every person as untrustworthy. You have to believe there?s somebody out there who is trustworthy, who?ll stick in there,? adding, ?I still believe in love.?

Review and Giveaway of Pressman's iPieces iPad Board Games

My family loves to play games. ?With the additional electronics we have in our home, we have been looking for more ways to connect and have fun through them as well. ?I was really excited to try the new iPieces Games from Pressman Games as they looked like fun. ?I was right!

The first game we tried out was Air Hockey. My 8 year old and I have so much fun with this game and often wager clearing the dishes from the table as part of the winning the tournament (let?s just say that mom seems to have gotten the short end of the stick on that deal as she beats me nearly every single time)! ?It was a little difficult to control when we first started, but once we realized that we had to keep constant connection with the iPad, it worked much, much better. ?There were not too many instructions provided, but then again, what do you need to lean about playing air hockey?

We also tried Snakes and Ladders. ?This games is similar to one most of you know ? Chutes and Ladders. ?The difference is, when you land on spaces with a ladder image, you lay a ladder piece on the board to connect you with the space above. ?However, if you land on a space with a snakes head, you slide down his body to a lower numbered location. ?This was a fun one as 4 of us were able to play at one time ? from my 4 year old up through my 8 year old. ?They really enjoyed it and it is has been a fun one for them as well.

This is a great gift idea for someone and a way to bring back those family game nights ? with a touch of technology. ?Our family is always looking to embrace technology (as it is here to stay) and find ways to help us keep up with the ever changing world, without losing sight of what is important ? being together and enjoying one another.

THE GIVEAWAY:

One reader will receive an iPieces game of their choice! ?You can choose from:

Air Hockey

Snakes and Ladders?

Entry is simple ? just leave a comment answering the question. ?You can gain bonus entries if I?ve listed them below ? just leave a separate comment for method of entry. Note: All comments must be left HERE on the blog. Comments left via Facebook, Google+ or Twitter will not be included.

Coke Ad Forces Ordinary Folks Into A 007 Foot Chase - Business ...

Coca-Cola

Coke Zero's "Skyfall" video

The new Coke Zero "Skyfall" video is yet another textbook case of how to create a successful viral ad.

It's a simple idea, followed by an incredibly complicated execution: How do ordinary people react if they're suddenly forced into a James Bond-style foot chase through a crowded European railway station?

The spot was created by viral masters Duval Guillaume Modem, best-known for their Belgian TNT effort earlier this year, which featured unsuspecting villagers who find themselves in the middle of gunfights, runaway ambulances, and lingerie-wearing women on motorcycles.

Following a similar formula for Coke, Duval Guillaume Modem set up digital vending machines in an Antwerp train station to offer travelers free tickets to the launch of "Skyfall."

There's just one catch: the free tickets are on platform 6, and the punters are given only 70 seconds to get there.

As they race across the station, the befuddled commuters find themselves confronted with just the sort of nonsense that crops up in the movies ? two guys carrying a plate glass window at just the wrong moment, a fruit vendor spilling an avalanche of oranges, and so on.

It turns out that the guys who take up the challenge handle the assignment with a fair amount of grace:

Researchers launch innovative, hands-on online tool for science education [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 22-Oct-2012

University of California - San Diego

Computer scientists at the University of California, San Diego and at St. Petersburg Academic University in Russia, have developed a one-of-a-kind, hands-on online learning tool that weaves together for the first time science and programming educationand automatically grades homework too.

"While modern biology is inundated with computation, biology students at U.S. universities are taught neither programming nor bioinformatics and as a result are unprepared for the challenges that await them in their own discipline," said Pavel Pevzner, a computer science professor at the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego. "We provide a tool to fill that learning gap."

The new tool, called Rosalind, diverges from large-scale, online open education platforms such as Coursera and Udacity. Instead of listening to a lecture, students are required to complete increasingly difficult problems at their own pace. Researchers say it's the only online tool using this method to teach science that they know of.

Computer scientists hope to make Rosalind a premier educational resource not only for students lacking access to higher education, but also for universities aiming to update their curricula. The site offers an environment designed for professors that grades homework assignments automatically. This environment promises to help universities offer online courses to a larger student population by creating a "zero-cost teaching assistant." Rosalind also could act as a complement to the lectures offered on Coursera and Udacity.

"In a traditional classroom environment, teaching assistants wind up grading the same homework assignment over and over," said Phillip Compeau, one of Pevzner's graduate students at UC San Diego, who created Rosalind with Nikolay Vyahhi, a graduate student in St. Petersburg. "By automating grading, we hope to foster individualized instruction and fuel the transition from traditional textbook exercises to a programming-driven homework environment."

Rosalind primarily targets biologists who want to learn bioinformatics, and is also helpful for biology or computer science professionals who want to learn more about bioinformatics. The platform has already attracted more than 1,600 beta testers from more than 50 countries. "Rosalind is already helping students who are brave enough to dive into bioinformatics without waiting for their universities to update their curricula, and it's only a matter of time before this model spreads to other disciplines," Pevzner said.

The beta version of Rosalind became available only six weeks ago, but students from six different countries have already solved all the problems in the platform, said Vyahhi. "To keep up with them, the Rosalind team aims to add 100 new problems by the end of the year."

Rosalind begins with a simple computational problem: given a strand of DNA, count the number of times that each of the four nucleotides appears in the strand. Subsequent exercises steadily grow in complexity, creating a problem tree in which the students' biological and computational knowledge is constructed simultaneously. After solving only a few dozen problems, students will possess a wide arsenal of bioinformatics algorithms and will be prepared to tackle advanced problems that even graduate students may find challenging.

"The way in which Rosalind problems build on each other ensures that students are continuing to process the material instead of simply regurgitating notes for a test," said Pevzner. "Completing Rosalind problems constitutes mastery of the subject, which is difficult to achieve with traditional courses online. I am happy to give top Rosalind students an A even though they have not attended my class."

###

Rosalind is a joint project between UC San Diego and St. Petersburg Academic University. The project is supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Russian Ministry of Science and Education.

Rosalind was named after Rosalind Franklin, a British X-ray crystallographer whose findings were used by Francis Crick and James Watson to formulate their hypothesis that DNA is structured as a double helix.

LG announces Windows 8 slider laptop and allinone PC

Windows 8 imminent launch continues to draw out even more devices in almost every permutation imaginable. LG's up next, with its collection ranging from a familiar-looking V325 all-in-one PC, through to a slider PC with tablet skills. The size of LG's 11.6-inch H160 hybrid means we're not certain whether it'll be running Windows RT or the more power-intensive complete package. LG's brief explanation below the press shots also suggests we're only looking at two models for now -- despite the three devices on show here; presumably that tablet is just the laptop transformed, given that the company decided to put that particular family of devices on the back burner. The hybrid laptop houses its own auto-slide button, and measures in at 15.9mm thick, despite the built-in keyboard. The 11.6-inch screen is another LG-made IPS panel, promising up to 178 degrees of crisp visibility, while the manufacturer expects the battery to last up to 10 hours. Connectivity encompasses WiFi, HDMI output and a USB port and -- according to Google's translation -- a microSD card slot. The device will have to compete for fans against Sony's similarly-sliding VAIO Duo 11 -- not to mention Toshiba's U925t Ultrabook.

The touchscreen V325 AIO packs all the thinking parts behind a 23-inch display, with up to 10-point touch sensitivity. There's a (presumably Korea-only) TV tuner built-in, which can be activated without powering up the whole PC, while processing powering is provided by a third-generation Core i5 processor and NVIDIA's GeForce GT640M. Both devices are currently set to remain on home turf for now, starting from October 26th and will be accompanied by LG's latest range of Ultrabooks, refreshed with Windows 8 software.

Syria has long, tumultuous history in Lebanon

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syria has a long and tumultuous history of meddling into Lebanese affairs. For much of the past 30 years, the seven-times-smaller Lebanon has lived under Syrian military and political domination. Damascus has often stirred tensions within Lebanon's explosive sectarian mix of Christians and Muslims to advance its regional interests, including during the country's 15-year civil war that ended in 1990. Syria's powerful allies in Lebanon include the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah. Important milestones affecting the Syria-Lebanon relationship:

SYRIA'S CIVIL WAR: Since the uprising against President Bashar Assad began in February 2011, Lebanon has been steadily drawn into the unrest ? a troubling sign for the country with political parties rooted in various Christian and Muslim sects, many of which are armed. While Syria's revolt has intensified between predominantly Sunni rebels and Assad's regime ? dominated by Alawites, an offshoot Shiite group ? Lebanon has seen a steady flow of refugees from Syria, with frequent street clashes along its northern border. Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, who heads a government dominated by Hezbollah and other pro-Syrian groups, has led a policy of "disassociation" from its influential neighbor. Damascus has accused Sunni groups in Lebanon of supporting rebels by trying to establish a supply line to anti-regime fighters across Lebanon's northern border.

Tensions between Beirut and Damascus deepened in August, after an arrest of former Lebanese Information Minister Michel Samaha, one of Syria's most loyal allies in Lebanon. A senior Lebanese police official, speaking anonymously because he was not authorized to talk to the media, said Samaha confessed to having personally transported explosives in his car from Syria to Lebanon to kill Lebanese. A military court indicted Samaha; Syrian Brig. Gen. Ali Mamlouk, a close aide of Assad, was indicted in absentia on charges of furnishing the explosives.

___

POLITICAL ASSASSINATIONS: Political assassinations in Lebanon have occurred with impunity for decades, and Syria has been blamed for many of the killings. In 2005, Syria was widely accused of involvement in the killing of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, a wealthy businessman and an influential Sunni politician. Hariri was hailed in Lebanon for rebuilding Beirut after the 15-year civil war. Following his death in a car bomb explosion, Damascus was forced to withdraw its troops and Syria's grip in Lebanon began to slip. The U.N.-backed Special Tribunal for Lebanon has indicted four Hezbollah members as suspects in the Hariri assassination. Hezbollah denies involvement in Hariri's killing and has refused to extradite the suspects.

Many Lebanese residents accused Assad's regime of being behind Friday's assassination of Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan, a Sunni, who headed the intelligence division of Lebanon's domestic security forces that has been probing the assassination plot against Hariri. Al-Hassan and his agents have been credited with identifying Samaha, the former information minister, as Syria's link to Lebanon. Damascus has condemned the bombing.

___

HEZBOLLAH: The Iran-backed Hezbollah has been Syria's most powerful ally in Lebanon, particularly since Damascus ended its military presence in Lebanon seven years ago. The Shiite militant group has dominated Lebanese politics for more than a decade and is now in control of the government. In 2006, Hezbollah gained support from Sunnis and Christians during a 34-day war with Israel, although Lebanon's southern villages and towns and the predominantly Shiite suburbs of Beirut sustained heavy damage.

Opponents of Assad's regime say Syria's embattled president has maintained his influence in Lebanon through allies such as Hezbollah.

Since the beginning of the Syrian uprising, Hezbollah has sought to distance itself from the turmoil in Syria, although there have been allegations that the group has sent fighters to help Assad's regime fight rebels. Hezbollah's leader, Sheik Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, has not publicly sanctioned any operations in support of Assad, and warned the mayhem in the neighboring country was out of the group's control.

___

TROOPS ON THE GROUND: Lebanon's 15-year civil war ended in 1990 with Syrian forces defeating opponents, controlling large parts of the country and installing allied governments in Beirut. Syrian forces moved into Lebanon in 1976 as peacekeepers after the country got engulfed in civil war between Christian and Muslim militias.

Syrians were drawn into the conflict, and clashed with the Israeli troops after the 1982 invasion aimed at driving out Palestinian guerrillas. In 2000, Bashar Assad became president of Syria, succeeding his late father, Hafez Assad. Israel withdrew from South Lebanon, increasing pressure on Syria to leave. Syrian troops pulled out five years later, after sweeping street protests following Hariri's assassination. Many in Lebanon and its Western-backers blamed Syria for the killing. Damascus has denied involvement.

Mental Health ? Ames Racquet & Fitness Center

It was a long week. Had some really good workouts. Just been working at trying to get workouts done and eat healthier. Decided today to take a mental break and just go have some fun. Went to Des Moines farmer's market and picked up some fresh veggies. Did some garage sales. Ended up doing a water walking workout because my wife had missed a couple days she wanted to make sure she would be ready to do Monday's trainer workout. We like to do Saturday workouts because there seems to be less people. Then did a movie and tried Wheatsfields for the first time. Great mental break and now ready for the next week. It feels good to be able to go for a whole day. That wouldn't have happened 6 weeks ago.

Energy Group Slams EPA Fracking Study as 'Sloppy, Unscientific'

According to UPI, the American Petroleum Institute (API) has publically criticized a hydraulic fracturing, commonly known as "fracking," study conducted by the Environmental Protect Agency (EPA). The EPA conducted an analysis on a Wyoming aquifer located near a natural gas field and found that the water contained several synthetic chemicals that are common of the fracking process. However, the industry trade group asserts the study is "unscientific" and that it threatens the fracking industry.

Here are some facts and details about the study and the API's criticism of the EPA:

* The EPA's testing results, taken over a period of three years, were released in a draft report last year and after criticism from several natural gas companies, new government research on the same site was conducted and released this past September by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), noted the Wall Street Journal.

* Concerns over fracking chemicals in drinking water supplies motivated the series of studies in Pavillion, Wyo.

* In September after the second report was released, the EPA stated that the USGS data is "relatively consistent" with its own data.

* However, API is arguing that there are important differences in the USGS study in that it did not sample low-flow monitoring wells and that it also did not find several substances that the EPA's study found.

* The Houston Chronicle reported that API director Erik Milito said of the studies, "A bad study could be counterproductive, and there are enough missteps and unanswered questions about EPA's Pavillion sampling to raise concerns about the broader hydraulic fracturing water study?they really need to start from scratch."

* A major concern that the trade group has is that the "sloppy" study could reach further as the EPA prepares its national study on fracking, according to the Hill.

* The 2011 study at Pavillion was the first time the government concluded a connection between fracking practices and contaminated groundwater supplies. Citizens and environmental groups claim that this link is present in other areas of the country as well.

* In light of the criticism, several environmental organizations, including the Sierra Club and the Natural Resources Defense Council, have supported the risks of fracking outlined by the study.

* Both the EPA's draft report and data from the USGS will be submitted to an independent review by a panel of experts. Public comment is open until Jan. 15, 2013.

* Under a congressional mandate, the EPA is conducting further studies that examine the link between fracking and water with a final report scheduled to be released in 2014.

Rachel Bogart provides an in-depth look at current environmental issues and local Chicago news stories. Currently pursuing her master's degree in environmental science, she applies her knowledge and passion to both topics to garner further public awareness.

SAUS SAUSES IT UP WITH SAUSY SAUS EVENT ? The Cascade l ...

By Sasha Moedt (The Cascade) ? Email

Print Edition: October 17, 2012

The Sociology Anthropology Undergraduate Society (SAUS) was getting saucy Thursday night, with two bands ready to get up on the stage at AfterMath, Anth-Soc trivia cards on the table, and a new $3 shot called the Indiana Jones (get it? Because of archaeology?). Needless to say, UFV?s social scientists were pretty happy.

The music was blaring, and the place was filling up. SAUS board members wandered from table to table selling the 50-50 draw. They had a deal ? $10 for the amount of tickets that can be measured from finger tip to fingertip, arms spread out. Good idea in theory, but perhaps they weren?t expecting the giant guy with the wingspan of an albatross sitting with his buddies at the back of the pub.

Students, delighted that they could use what they learned in the classroom in the real world, filled out the trivia cards.

The bands took a while to get on the stage. Daniel Moir and his crew got on first. Moir?s done pretty well as a Canadian musician?from Edmonton?at age 20. He sang some quiet folksy-pop music that smoothed the atmosphere in the darkly-lit pub. CIVL worked the sound. Moir has a very soft, mellow voice that matches his young, boyish face, and he had an honest, almost solemn or shy presence that made him feel pretty authentic.

Between the bands, Sophie Thomas, SAUS president and Caity Therrien, secretary, read out the trivia winners. Of course I didn?t bother guessing the questions ? as an English major, the phrase Homo floresiensis doesn?t ring any bells. Apparently, it?s the smallest human species that ever lived, standing at three feet tall. But, the species is nicknamed ?the hobbit? by anthropologists ? So I think we English majors can mingle with the Anth-Soc types after all.

Those who did guess correct won some cool stuff: gift certificates for shoes at Lady Fern and food at the Roasted Grape (both in downtown Abby), a Storm Brewing hoody and a beach bag filled with goodies. Mr. Albatross and his friends won the 50-50, of course.

This is THE SHOES came on loud and awesomely bluesy. Jereme Collette started off with heavy beats on the kick drum and electric guitar, and Sabrina Robson just blew everyone?s mind with a sexy, husky voice that was so powerful. Robson played the harmonica and smashed the cowbell with equal energy, and Collette rocked his beard (it just made that raw, rough vibe stronger). Robson?s vocals alone could have kept me there.

SAUS president Sophie Thomas was the one who brought forward the idea of bringing them out to Abbotsford; she knew them through her partner?s family. ?I actually met them a few months ago at a wedding, and had got chatting with them,? Thomas explained. ?They were quite keen on getting out to the Valley, so, I had heard them and then I presented the SAUS board members with the music ? that this was a really excellent opportunity, let?s get them out, students will love them ? Jereme was actually an Anthropology student himself so there?s that interesting connection there.

It can?t be denied that This is THE SHOES really made the night. Sophie Thomas said that ?the goal with looking at a band like them was primarily wanting to focus on a local band, somebody related and fun and that was going to be stimulating and enjoyable for the students as well.? It certainly was that!

All in all, SAUS board members were happy with the event. ?It ran smoothly! This was our first pub night, so there were little details we didn?t even think to take into account, like the kitchen closing at 8 p.m., we just assumed that it would be open,? Thomas laughed. ?So that would probably be the one glitch of the night.?

?Other than that, we had tremendous amount of support from Brad at AfterMath and from the SUS board members and from CIVL ? to get us all the information we needed in order to have it run smoothly, so because of that support it went very well.?

Do Holiday Console Price Cuts Matter? - Features ... - Game Informer

Recently all three of the current home consoles announced a price cut or at least a new value proposition for their system. Will this have a huge effect this holiday season?

Within the space of a month, all three console manufacturers announced new pricing and/or configurations for their systems. Microsoft has cut the price of its Xbox 360 bundles by $50, the Wii dropped down to $130 (as part of a jam-packed bundle), and the PS3 has a new model that includes a 500GB bundle with Assassin's Creed III (for $299) as well as a smaller 250GB version that's cheaper ($269) and which comes with the Game of the Year edition of Uncharted 3.

While the Wii U comes out on November 18, and therefore the stakes aren't the same for the Wii as with the other systems, Jesse Divnich, vice president of insights and analysis at market research firm EEDAR, thinks that the recent round of price drops and bundling is par for the course.

Divnich says that straight hardware price cuts are effective early in the console cycle, while later on software bundles "play a larger role in increasing demand." Thus, he's not expecting the lower prices alone to make much of a change in the overall console race, but "success this holiday season will come down to the software and who has the best available bundles." He also states that bundle buyers tend to be new adopters who are in his view "much more lucrative to a hardware manufacturer."

If it's a "bundle war," as Divnich puts it, then it could get intense. Each console has something to call its own. Sony with the aforementioned triple-A games, Microsoft with both an upcoming Halo 4 Limited Edition bundle and a Kinect bundle, and the Wii with a package that includes the Wii MotionPlus, Wii Sports, and Wii Sports Resort.

Divnich predicts: "The 2012 holiday will have the most aggressive Black Friday bundles ever."

This Is Officially How You'll Be Fueling Your Car In The Future [Electric-cars]

The future of automobiles is upon us. Or at least it's getting a lot closer. This week, the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International announced the first official charging plug standard for North American cars. The brand new plugs may arrive as early as next year, meaning that, someday soon, the new American dream could come with a chicken in every pot and a J1772 plug in every garage outlet. More »
